When and Where

Damage

At 7:11pm on the 22nd of May, 1990 an earthquake struck 160km off the coast of Sounthern Chile across the city of Valdiva. It extended from 900-1000km streching over the Nazca plate and  the South American plate.

The earthquake had an estimated magnitude from 9.4-9.6. Many cities in Chile were effected by the earthquake but the real damage happened 15 minutes after when it caused a tsunami, that would cause significant damage and about 1600 deaths with 3000 injuries, including it leaving 2 million people homeless.

Not only did the earthquake destroy man-made objects but it changed some of the Earths features. It created landslides on mountains, falling rocks would damn up or changing the course of rivers.

It happened because of the Nazca plate subducting under the South American plate. 2 days later a volcano that had been unactive for over 40 years suddenly erupted and some seismologists suspect that it could be linked with the earthquake.

How did it happen?
